HC Deb 09 April 1936 vol 310 cc2957-8W
Mr. SEXTON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount paid for transport of forces, nurses, munitions, and all impedimenta of war to railway companies of this country by the British Government during the Great War, 1914 to 1919?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The railways were in the possession of the Government throughout the War and under the Railway Agreements no charge was made for the conveyance of Government traffic, but the railways were guaranteed for the period of the War the equivalent of their net receipts for the year 1913.
