HC Deb 02 April 1936 vol 310 cc2177-8W

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the maximum amount of able-bodied relief paid to man, wife, and family in Coatbridge, Airdrie, Greenock, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Kirkintilloch, Dundee, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Aberdeen, Cumnock, and Stirlingshire?

The following information has been obtained from the local authorities:

Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen Burghs.—The maximum amounts of able-bodied relief normally afforded to an applicant for himself, wife and dependent children are:

Per week.
s. d.
Glasgow 40 0
Edinburgh 45 0
Aberdeen 38 0

Non-dependent members of the applicant's family in the household are relieved separately and the amount of relief afforded to such non-dependents is not subject to a maximum.

Greenock Burgh, and Dumbarton County (Kirkintilloch).—The maximum amounts of able-bodied relief afforded to a household, including non-dependent members of the applicant's family, are:

Per week.
s. d.
Greenock Burgh 67 6
Dumbarton County (Kirkintilloch) 37 3

There are no maxima in operation in the following areas:

Coatbridge, Airdrie, Lanark County, Dundee, Falkirk, Ayr County (Cumnook), and Stirling County.

Authorities do not in practice adhere rigidly to the maxima in their scales where there are exceptional circumstances, e.g., sickness in the family, exceptionally large family or high rent.
