HC Deb 02 April 1936 vol 310 cc2174-5W
Sir G. MITCHESON

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he proposes to take to deal with the increase in the proportion of foreign shipping engaged in carrying goods in and out of the United Kingdom?

Dr. BURGIN

The tonnage of British vessels entering and clearing with cargoes in the foreign trade of the United Kingdom increased during 1935 as compared with the preceding year, although the proportion of foreign ships was slightly greater in 1935 than in 1934. Measures to assist the British shipping industry, such as the subsidy to tramp shipping and the "scrap and build" scheme, are being continued and advantage has been and will be taken of every opportunity in negotiating trade agreements or in any other direction to improve the position.
