asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that foreign-owned vessels are being chartered by merchants in the Channel Islands to bring produce to the United Kingdom; and whether he will make it a condition of any preferential tariff or quota that when available British ships shall be used?

I am aware that a limited number of foreign ships are employed

The figures for which the hon. Member asks are as follow:

in the trade between this country and the Channel Islands, but by far the greater part of the trade is carried in British ships. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.
