HC Deb 09 April 1935 vol 300 cc995-6W
Sir W. BRASS

asked the Minister of Transport, whether his intention, notified on 22nd February, to make an Order that the 30-miles-per-hour speed limit should not apply to Hampton Court Road (A 308) from Lion Gates, Hampton Court, to Church Grove, Hampton Wick, was in agreement with the advice given to him by the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee; for what reasons was this intention departed from and the road in. question excluded from his Order dated the 8th March, de-restricting certain roads in the London traffic area; and whether, as this road has a carriageway recently widened to at least 30 feet with adequate footpaths, has no side-road junctions or buildings throughout its length of three-quarters of a mile, and is bordered on one side by Bushey Park and on the other by the Home Park, which are enclosed by continuous walls, he will reconsider his previous Order with a view to de-restricting the road?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I consulted the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee before giving public notice of my intention to de-restrict a number of roads in the London Traffic Area, but the Committee made no recommendation in respect of the section of the Hampton Court Road referred to by my hon. and gallant Friend. As the result of the public notice, representations were made to me that Hampton Court Road should be excluded from the list of roads to be de-restricted, and taking into account that it is not one of the newly constructed by-pass or arterial roads, and the fact that it carries a comparatively heavy service of trolley vehicles and, during the summer months, omnibus services as well, I decided that the speed limit should apply. I do not consider that I would be justified in de-restricting this section of road at the present time.
