HC Deb 11 May 1934 vol 289 cc1348-50W
Mr. R. DAVIES

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the complaints made by owner-occupiers, in particular, of injustice done to them as ratepayers because assessment committees are not defining properly the gross value of dwellings as set forth in Section 68 of the Rating and Valuation Act, 1925; and whether he will take steps to remove this injustice?

Sir H. YOUNG

I have received a few complaints in connection with the Valuation Lists which have recently come into force, but the matter is not one in respect to which I am empowered to take any action. The determination of assessments for rating purposes rests entirely with the local assessment committees, subject to the ratepayer's right of appeal to the : Courts. If any ratepayer is aggrieved by any assessment in a Valuation List, he may at any time make a proposal for the amendment of the list and, if dissatisfied with the decision of the assessment committee on the proposal, may appeal to Quarter Sessions.
