The number of cattle, sheep and pigs slaughtered during the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Somerset and the compensation paid in each case are as follows:

Disease occurred on eight premises within a period of five days. Inquiries by the Ministry of Agriculture have not revealed any definite origin of disease in the original outbreak. The seven secondary outbreaks were due to the spread of infection from the original outbreak prior to the imposition of restrictions.
