§ Mr. GOLDIEasked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that the Centre Tree of England, which abuts on the highway at Royal Leamington Spa, has at the instance of the local authority been surrounded by a red-brick wall, and yellow electric-light standards or reflectors have been erected nearby, thus destroying the rural nature of the site; 1009W whether authority for this was granted by his Department; and whether he will take steps to preserve the amenities of the borough in the interests not merely of residents but the public generally?
Mr. STANLEYThe permission of my Department is not required for work of this character, nor for the erection of lamp standards, and I am not responsible for the amenities of Leamington, but I am informed that the widening of au adjacent street has made it necessary to protect this tree by a dwarf brick wall.
