§ Dr. O'DONOVANasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education if the trust deeds of the Pinner schools are now under review by the Board; and, if so, will provision be made by regulation so that children, orphans of Roman Catholic parents, may he brought up in their parents' faith?
§ Mr. RAMSBOTHAMThe Royal Commercial Travellers' Schools, Pinner, are restricted absolutely to the children of living or deceased commercial travellers, and the Board of Education have under consideration an application for a very limited modification of this restriction. An alteration of the arrangements relating to religious instruction would be outside the scope of the scheme which is in contemplation, and a provision such as is indicated in the question would be inconsistent with certain fundamental conditions of the trust, namely, that all children admitted to the schools shall attend the public worship of the Church of England and shall be taught one of two Catechisms, to be selected by their parents or nearest relations or friends, that is to say, the Catechism of the Church of England, or that of the Assembly of Divines at Westminster.
