HC Deb 21 December 1933 vol 284 c1500W
Mr. D. G. SOMERVILLE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can make any statement as to the purpose of the recent British mission to Sanaa; and what has been the result?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

Negotiations for the conclusion of a treaty with the object of regularising relations between His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom on the one hand and the Imam of the Yemen on the other hand have been proceeding for a number of years. Matters have now reached a sufficiently advanced stage to justify the despatch of a mission to the Imam to conclude these negotiations. The Resident at Aden is, therefore, at the Imam's invitation, proceeding to Sanaa for this purpose. The Resident and other members of the mission left Aden on 15th December. If a treaty is concluded, the Government of India will also be a party to it.
