HC Deb 04 December 1933 vol 283 cc1304-5W
Mr. THORNE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the approximate extra cost to the Treasury of the Government accepting the responsibility of reducing to 40 per cent. the cost to local authorities in respect of their able-bodied unemployed instead of 60 per cent. as provided in the Unemployment Bill?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

On the assumption made in the Financial Memorandum on the Bill as to the cost of the transferred services in the standard year, the extra cost to the Exchequer of reducing the contributions of local authorities from 60 per cent, to 40 per cent. would be £1,300,000 a year until 31st March, 7937.
