HC Deb 03 April 1933 vol 276 c1438W
Mr. ATKINSON

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he has considered the advisability of stopping the sale of Dutch cheese as Cheshire cheese; and if he is prepared to take any steps in the matter?

Major ELLIOT

I have no power to prohibit the use of the description "Cheshire" in connection with the sale of any cheese of that type. My hon. and learned Friend will, however, be aware that under provisions of the Merchandise Marks Act, 1926, if the description "Cheshire" is applied to foreign cheese on sale or exposure for sale in this country, then an indication of the foreign origin of the cheese must also be given.
