§ Mr. MANDERasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether British members of the staffs of British Consulates in Greece are paid in drachmae; and what provision has been made to maintain the sterling value of such salaries in view of the depression of the local currency?
1248W
§ Mr. EDEN:Those members of the staff of British Consular posts in Greece who are officers of the established Consular Service are paid in sterling. The rest of the staff, who may or may not be British subjects, and who are recruited locally by the officers in charge of the various posts, are paid in drachmae. Additions have been made to their salaries, but in relation to the internal purchasing power of the drachma and not to its value in sterling.
