§ Sir R. GOWER
asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the number of men unemployed in the cement-making industry in Kent, he will make it a condition of all housing grants that all cement used in connection with housing schemes should be of British origin?
Sir H. YOUNG
In view of the terms of Section 10 (1) of the Housing (Fin-ancial Provisions) Act, 1924, legislation would be required for this purpose, and1170W I do not think that the introduction of such legislation would be practicable at the present time. My hon. Friend is no doubt aware that local authorities have been urged to make use of goods and materials of home production or manufacture to the utmost extent practicable, and I have at present no reason to believe that they are not adopting this course.
