HC Deb 19 November 1931 vol 259 c1042W
Mr. HICKS

asked the Minister of Health what was the expenditure of the approved societies during the last financial year with regard to the continuance in insurance of the unemployed; what contributions have been made to them from the stamp sales fund; and what surplus, if any, remains in that fund?

Sir H. YOUNG

The information asked for in the first part of the question could only be obtained by a detailed examination of the records of every approved society and branch, and so is not practically available. A sum of £500,000 from the Stamp Sales Account has been distributed to approved societies for the year 1930 towards the cost of excusal of arrears due to unemployment. The surplus remaining in that account, after allowing for a similar distribution for the year 1931, is estimated to be about £1,000,000.
