asked the Minister of Agriculture the total number of smallholdings owned by local authorities in England and Wales in the latest year for which information is available, together with the acreage, the rent-roll, and the amount of rent due in that year which fell into arrear?

Dr. ADDISON

On 31st December, 1930, local authorities in England and Wales were in possession of an area of 445,954 acres of land acquired for the purposes of smallholdings, 373,878 acres having been purchased and 72,076 acres being held on lease by the authorities. The total number of smallholdings was 27,461, and the rent-roll £958,807. Information as to the amount of rent in arrear is not available.
