HC Deb 25 February 1931 vol 248 c2154W
Sir H. SAMUEL

asked the Minister of Agriculture what is the number of men employed in the beet-sugar factories in the United Kingdom; how many are employed throughout the year; and the average number of weeks for which the remainder are employed?

Dr. ADDISON

The total number of men employed in the beet-sugar factories in Great Britain during the past beet-sugar manufacturing campaign (from October to January, inclusive) was 9,900, the average length of employment being 16 weeks. Of these men, 2,200 are permanently employed. During the summer of 1930, about 1,800 men, in addition to the 2,200 permanently employed, were engaged in the factories for an average period of 15 weeks on the refining of imported raw sugar.
