§ Mr. RHYS DAVIESasked the Secretary of State for India the amount of the present Salt Tax in India and what proportion the tax bears to the wholesale and the retail price of salt in India; and if he will give information showing the total revenue to the Government of India from this source?
§ Sir S. HOAREThe excise duty is Rs. 1.4.0 per maund plus a surcharge of2242W 25 per cent. imposed in September last. The customs duty is the same as the excise with an addition of 4½ annas per maund. I have no recent information as to the price of salt in India, and am obtaining this from India. It is estimated that the total salt revenue for the year 1931–32 will amount to about Rs. 8,18,00,000 (equal to £6,135,000 at 1s. 6d. to the rupee).
