Sir N. STEWART SANDEMANasked the First Commissioner of Works whether his Department has been consulted about the designs for a room to contain the Elgin marbles at the British Museum; and if he will explain why the preparation of designs for the work was not entrusted to a British architect?
§ Mr. ORMSBY-GOREYes, Sir. My Department is being consulted. The appointment of the architect was a matter for the donor, Sir Joseph Duveen, who selected an eminent American architect (Mr. Pope). The design, of course, is subject to the approval of the Trustees.
