asked the President of the Board of Trade the value of imported cotton lace and net retained in this country for 1924 and 1929, respectively, and the percentage increase or decrease; the value of cotton lace and net exports for 1924 and 1929, respectively, and the percentage increase or decrease; the value of re-exports of cotton lace and net for 1924 and 1929, respectively, and the percentage increase or decrease; the value of sales of British-made cotton lace and net in the home market for 1924 and 1929, respectively; and the number of workers actually employed in the Nottingham lace industry in July, 1924, and in July, 1929?

The following table shows the declared value of cotton lace and net imported and retained in and exported and re-exported from Great Britain and Northern Ireland during the years 1924 and 1929, and the percentage increase or decrease in 1929 compared with 1924:

As regards the sales of British-made cotton lace and net in the home market, I am unable to furnish any reliable estimate as the information at my disposal relates to little more than half the industry. The difference between the number of insured workers (excluding outworkers) aged 16 to 64, and the number unemployed, classified as belonging to the lace industry and registered in

NOTES.—After the imposition of the duty, imports of Lace and Embroidery by parcel post were classified under the appropriate heading as "Lace" or "Embroidery". Prior to that date they were included under the general heading "Parcel Post—non-dutiable articles," (the nature of the contents of the parcels not being shown). Exports by parcel post are excluded from the above statement.
Goods passing in transit through the United Kingdom are included in the records of imports and re-exports except in the case of goods transhipped under bond.
Lace and Embroidery forming part of articles of apparel are not included in the above statement.
