HC Deb 15 May 1930 vol 238 cc2066-7W
Mr. BUCHANAN

asked the Minister of Labour (1) the number of chairmen of Courts of Referees appointed in Glasgow and district since the operation of the recent Act; and if in every case a lawyer has been appointed;

(2) if, in the appointment of the new chairmen of Courts of Referees in Glasgow, any notification was made of the proposed appointments; what was the method taken to secure suitable appointments; what were the qualifications required; if any person or persons from the area gave her advice on the matter; and, if so, who?

Miss BONDFIELD

The appointments of five existing chairmen of the Glasgow Courts of Referees who all possess legal qualifications have been renewed. Other appointments are still under consideration, and in this connection I have given the Trade Union Congress General Council and the National Confederation of Employers' Organisations an opportunity of suggesting names. In making these appointments, I act in consultation with the Secretary of State for Scotland. I am sending my hon. Friend a note of the qualifications required.
