Mr. GUINNESSasked the Minister of Agriculture what acreage of sugar-beet was grown during the season 1929–30; and what acreage has been contracted for in the forthcoming season?
§ Dr. ADDISONThe area under sugar-beet in Great Britain in 1929 was 230,553 acres. The acreage contracted for in 1930 is approximately 320,000 acres.
§ Lord FERMOYasked the Minister of Agriculture whether his attention has been called to the employment of Irish workers on the sugar-beet crop in the eastern counties; and whether he is prepared to issue advice to those concerned as to the desirability of employing such labour only after all possible supplies of suitable local labour have been exhausted?
§ Dr. ADDISONI would refer the Noble Lord to the detailed reply given by my right hon. Friend to a question on this subject by the hon. Member for the Isle of Ely (Mr. de Rothschild) on 29th April. I am sending the Noble Lord a copy.
