HC Deb 23 January 1930 vol 234 cc367-8W
Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Health whether he can state from the information he has the extent of overcrowding as it now exists in London, and the number of families who are living more than two persons per room?

Mr. GREENWOOD

The reply to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the second part, the latest complete statistics available are contained in the Report of the Census of 1921. At the date of the Census, 683,498 persons in the county were living more than two to a room. It is estimated that between 1921 and 1928 the population of the county decreased by 55,000, while the number of houses increased by 30,000; and 22,622 houses were built by the London County Council outside the county. No later estimate of population is available, but over 2,500 more houses had been built by the London County Council by the end of 1929.
