HC Deb 04 February 1930 vol 234 c1708W
Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the Home Secretary whether he has received representations from prison authorities urging a modification of the period of 14 days' solitary confinement imposed on prisoners sentenced to hard labour; and what action he proposes to take?

Mr. CLYNES

The existing code of prison rules, including the rules prescribing the manner in which hard labour should be served, is at present under revision, and it is my intention in the revised code to omit the provision which requires men sentenced to hard labour to be employed in strict separation during the first 14 days of the sentence.
