HC Deb 04 February 1930 vol 234 c1698W
Viscount WOLMER

asked the Postmaster-General whether, seeing that the Imperial and International Communications, Limited, have offered to provide a telephone service to Australia at rates which will enable the public to telephone to Australia at two-thirds of the cost of existing rates to America, he proposes to reduce the rates to America to the Imperial and International Communications, Limited, scale?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

The possibility of making some reduction in the rates on the Anglo-American telephone service is under discussion with the company-operating the New York terminal, but I am not in a position at present to make any statement on the subject. It should be borne in mind that the conditions under which the Anglo-American service is worked differ materially from those which will apply to telephone services with the Dominions.
