asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he can state, according to the last return made by the education authorities in Scotland, the number of children between the ages of five and 16 years who were ascertained by them to be mentally deficient; the the number of these who were ascertained to be educable; the number who were ascertained to be ineducable; and the number of such children who were attending schools, institutions, and other centres; and are there any statistics that will show the number receiving home training?

According to the last return made by education authorities in Scotland, the number of children between five and 16 years of age in Scotland who were ascertained by them to be mentally defective was 4,910, of whom 3,993 were ascertained to be educable, and 917 to be ineducable. The number of educable mentally defective children receiving special instruction in schools and institutions is 3,938. There are 484 ineducable mentally defective children in the certified institutions, and the number of such children who have been placed under guardianship and who are receiving home training is 58.
