Captain BALFOURasked the Post-master-General if he is aware that Post Office letter and parcel-post mail bags are transported on the 16.43 train from Southampton West to London in an un-garded and unprotected luggage compartment through which passengers may pass; whether his Department are satisfied with such arrangements as regards 2245W safety of mails; and if similar conditions are permitted on other trains on this and other lines?
§ Mr. LEES-SMITHAs I stated in answer to the hon. Member for South-wark central on the 5th instant. I am satisfied that generally speaking all reasonable and practical precautions are taken to safeguard mails while under the charge of railway companies. I will, however, make inquiries about the arrangements on the train referred to, and I will communicate with the hon. Member.
