HC Deb 07 November 1929 vol 231 c1256W
Mr. MILLS

asked the Minister of Labour if she can state the number of new Employment Exchanges that have been sanctioned for erection; and whether the present dilapidated state of many Employment Exchanges will be dealt with?

Miss BONDFIELD

The condition of the Employment Exchange premises is engaging the close attention of myself and my right hon. Friend the First Commissioner of Works. Considerable progress is being made, 18 new building schemes being actually in progress, and in 47 other cases preparations for work are well advanced. The rest of the field is being urgently and continuously surveyed.

Mr. MILLS

asked the Minister of Labour if her attention has been called to the overtime worked in many Employment Exchanges in the North-West Kent area; and whether any steps are contemplated to increase these staffs?

Miss BONDFIELD

I am sending my hon. Friend a statement of the overtime worked at the Exchanges to which be refers. I think that after reading it he will agree that it cannot reasonably be described as excessive. I may add that I am having the position as to overtime carefully watched.
