HC Deb 06 November 1929 vol 231 c1063W

asked the Minister of Labour whether she can state the number of claims in Newcastle-on-Tyne for unemployment benefit which were rejected in the last insurance year on the ground that the applicant was not genuinely looking for work?

During the 12 months ended 8th July, 1929, 3,129 applications for unemployment benefit made at Employment Exchanges in the Newcastle-on-Tyne area were disallowed on the ground that the applicants were not genuinely seeking work. In addition, Courts of Referees recommended 651 cases for disallowance on the same ground on review after payment of 78 days' benefit.
