HC Deb 04 November 1929 vol 231 cc650-1W
Sir R. GOWER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the recent suspension of the drop in that part of civil servants' salaries which is dependent upon the cost-of-living index, he proposes to adopt the same course when the similar part of the salaries of naval officers next comes up for revision?

Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

The recent decision in regard to Civil Service bonus merely continues for the present winter months the rate of bonus in force during the summer of 1929. The present rates of pay of Naval officers are based on the Cost of Living figures for the latter half of 1926 and the analogy drawn by the hon. Member would not suffice to justify their retention after the 1st July next, when the next revision is due.
