HC Deb 01 November 1929 vol 231 cc492-3W
Mr. MANDER

asked the First Commissioner of Works if he will state the name of the quarry from which the stone used for repairing the Houses of Parliament is being obtained; what evidence there is of its use in London; and what guarantee exists that sufficient quantities will be available for a regular supply for the continuous work of repair and maintenance?

Mr. LANSBURY

The bulk of the stone used for the repair of the Houses of Parliament is being obtained from quarries owned by the Clipsham Quarry Company. A small quantity of Anston stone is also being obtained from a quarry at Kiveton Park near Sheffield. Clipsham stone has been used in the re pair of Buckingham Palace but apart from this it has been little used in Lon don. It has been used extensively at Oxford, where, after exposure for many years, it is still in excellent condition. Anston stone has been used at Lincoln's Inn Hall and the Geological Museum in Jermyn Street. I am advised by officers of the Geological Survey that ample material for the purpose is available.
