HC Deb 06 May 1929 vol 227 c1951W
Sir R. THOMAS

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is now in a position to state what recommendations have been made by the committee appointed by the Governor of the Gold Coast in regard to the sale of spirits to the natives?

Mr. AMERY

The answer is in the negative. The terms of reference of the Commission were as follow:

  1. (a) To advise whether any, and if so what, further action should be taken to control the consumption of spirits in the Gold Coast and Ashanti.
  2. (b) In the event of action being advised which would be likely to result in an appreciable loss of revenue, to make recommendations with a view to making good such loss.
The Commission will naturally have to investigate matters in many places, and I do not expect to be informed of their report for some time.
