TREVELYANThe total amount spent during the financial year 1927–28 (the latest year for which particulars are available) on maintenance allowances in secondary schools was £512, 898, and in public elementary schools £39,677. Separate returns are not made for central schools, which are classed under the general heading of public elementary schools. The expenditure was borne in approximately equal proportions by rates and taxes.
