§ Mr. GREENWOODThe total number of mental defectives ascertained by local authorities was 66,458 on 1st January last. Of these, 19,138 were maintained in institutions. I regret that the available statistics do not enable me to differentiate between those under and those over 16 years of age; but the total given does not include feeble-minded children for whom the local education authorities are responsible. The problem, of ensuring the provision of adequate accommodation is receiving constant attention.
