§ Mr. BENNI will ask the Government of India to obtain reports on the subject from our local representatives. I would, however, explain to the hon. Member that, while His Majesty's Government, by treaty or usage, exercise powers which have enabled them effectively to cheek the traffic in slaves, their powers of intervention in the internal affairs of the territories now in question are strictly limited.
