HC Deb 24 May 1928 vol 217 cc2075-6W
Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Health the total number of old age pensions payable on the last Friday in March, 1928, to men or women; and the total value of the orders and allowances paid in the 12 months ended to the last convenient date?

Mr. SAMUEL

The total number of old age pensions non-contributory (including "blind" pensions) and contributory in payment on the last payment date in March, 1928, was approximately 1,757,000. The total payments in respect of old age pensions during the 12 months ended 31st March, 1928, amounted to approximately £35,830,000, including £3,004,000 in respect of contributory old age pensions to persons between 65 and 70 years of age commencing on or after the 5th January, 1928.

Mr. GROVES

asked the Minister of Health if he will inquire the reason why Mrs. L. Harrington, of 199, Leyton Road, Stratford, E.15, has been refused a full pension?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

No appeal has been made to the Minister in this case, which would appear to be in the hands of the local pension committee.
