HC Deb 23 May 1928 vol 217 cc1917-8W
Captain CAZALET

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what is the total amount of money paid per annum in salaries and wages to members of the Civil Service, inclusive of those employed in temporary occupations?

Mr. SAMUEL

The total sum expended in the year ended 30th September, 1927, on salaries and wages of civilian staffs of all Government Departments is estimated to be approximately as follows:

£
Revenue Departments (including the Post Office) 42,150,000
Defence Departments (including outstations) 6,100,000
Civil Departments 16,825,000
The above figures do not include the cost of certain staffs employed abroad (e.g., Diplomatic and Consular Services, and staffs of Admiralty foreign yards) or the cost of Industrial Staffs. They include the gross expenditure on salaries and wages of Departments the cost of which is, in whole or in part, covered by fees.
