HC Deb 22 May 1928 vol 217 cc1710-1W
Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Health the number of deaths which have been registered as occurring through cancer for the 12 months ended 31st December, 1927, or last convenient date; and whether there is any Government grant made towards research in this disease?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The provisional number of deaths registered during 1927 as caused by cancer was 54,079. The expenditure borne on the Vote of my De- partment during the five years ending on the 31st March last which is directly assignable to cancer research was 28,843, and in addition the Exchequer grant administered by the Medical Research Council is applied to the promotion of research into this and other diseases. I would also refer the hon. Member to the information on this subject given in reply to his question on the 29th July, 1926.
