HC Deb 21 June 1928 vol 218 cc1777-8W
Mr. JENKINS

asked the Home Secretary if he is aware that there are a large number of colliery surface workers employed on and near the coal tip screens in South Wales, particularly in the anthracite area, who are suffering from chest diseases caused by the coal dust; and will he take steps to ascertain the conditions?

Commodore KING

I have been asked to reply, but am not yet in a position to do so. The matter is being investigated, and I shall be grateful for any specific information which the hon. Member can give me.

Mr. JENKINS

asked the Home Secretary if he is aware that a large number of surface workers are suffering from the effects of coal dust from screens and are not scheduled for compensation purposes; and will he take steps to extend the Workmen's Compensation Act to such cases where the affection arises out of and in course of their employment?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I have no information to this effect, but I understand that an inquiry is to be made by the Mines Department, and I will consider the hon. Member's suggestion when the results of this inquiry are available.
