§ Mr. MACLEANasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has recently received a deputation of fish curers and fish salesmen regarding the conditions of the fishing industry in the Firth of Clyde; the nature of the representations made by the deputation; whether he is now in a position to reply; and, if so, what are the terms of his reply?
§ Major ELLIOTThe Deputy-Chairman of the Fishery Board for Scotland recently received a deputation from the Glasgow and District Herring Merchants' Association. The deputation represented that the capture of large quantities of small herring such as occurred in Loch Striven during last winter was detrimental to the future of the herring fishing in the Firth of Clyde generally, and they suggested that herring fishing, at least by the seine net, should be prohibited in the upper waters of the Firth, including the Kyles of Bute and Loch Striven. The matter is under the consideration of the Fishery Board.
