HC Deb 21 June 1928 vol 218 cc1776-7W
Lord H. CAVENDISH-BENTINCK

asked the Minister of Labour how many miners are unemployed and how many working short time in the city and county of Nottingham?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

At 21st May the number of insured persons classified as belonging to the coal mining industry recorded as unemployed in the city and county of Nottingham was 9,552, of whom 4,384 were wholly unemployed and 5,168 temporarily stopped from the service of their employers.

Mr. SHINWELL

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that unem- ployed miners of Stoneyburn, West Lothian, have to sign the register at West Calder, 2½ miles distant; and whether he can arrange, in view of the extent of unemployment in the district, to establish a place for this purpose in Stoneyburn?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Inquiries are being made, and a communication will be sent to the hon. Member.
