HC Deb 19 December 1928 vol 223 c3050W
Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Labour whether there were any claims for unemployment insurance benefit referred to the Umpire from the Walworth Road (Borough) Employment Exchange for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date; and in how many of these cases benefit was allowed?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I regret that statistics giving the information desired are not available.

Mr. C. EDWARDS

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that Mr. Fred Cutter applied to the Blackwood (Monmouth) Exchange for a travelling ticket to enable him to go further afield to look for work; that he came to London and after a fortnight's search secured work; that some days later he received a letter from his wife stating that she had been refused his unemployment benefit and that he would have to come home to receive it personally; and that he, being unable to send any money home and owing three weeks' board in London, and knowing that his wife and five children were unprovided for, decided to return home after wasting his train fare and losing a job; and will he inquire into this case?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I am having inquiries made into this case, and will communicate with the hon. Member as soon as possible.
