HC Deb 11 April 1928 vol 162 c1229W

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether representations have been received from the trading community in Tanganyika in relation to the measures recently passed into law for the taxation of trade and places of business; if so, the nature of such representations; and what revenue has been estimated to accrue from the above taxes during the present year?

Representations have been received by telegraph to the effect that the measures referred to impose additional burdens on trade. The Governor has explained that this is not correct, as they replace the German law hitherto in force. A despatch from him is awaited. The estimated revenue from the tax arid licences provided under the Ordinances is £45,000, and I may add that, the estimate for last year, under the law previously in force, was £40,000, so that the increase most be small.
