HC Deb 17 November 1927 vol 210 cc1127-8W
Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in order to provide more work in the dockyards, he will give consideration to the breaking up of ships in the yards and the making of ships' fittings from the scrap steel in the yards?

Lieut.-Colonel HEADLAM

The question of breaking up ships in the dockyards has already been carefully considered, but, mainly on account of the large amount of space required, such work cannot be economically carried out in establishments actively engaged in ship building and ship repairing. As the hon. Member is aware, portions of the dock-yards at Rosyth and Pembroke have been leased to private firms for this purpose, and a number of vessels have been, and are still being broken up in those yards.
