HC Deb 02 June 1927 vol 207 c568W
Sir T. DAVIES

asked the Minister of Transport what was the mileage of rural roads which obtained a grant for the first time for maintenance during 1926–27 in England and Wales?

Colonel ASHLEY

Under the scheme which was inaugurated last year for assisting the highway authorities of rural areas in the maintenance of selected unclassified roads, 35,859 miles of rural roads in England and Wales became eligible for the first time for maintenance grant. It is not possible to state the exact mileage of roads to which grants were actually made, as on some roads no maintenance expenditure was incurred during the year in question.
