HC Deb 24 February 1927 vol 202 cc1928-9W
Mr. TAYLOR

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what income the revenue derived during the last financial year from motor taxation in Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

Mr. CHURCHILL

In 1925 the Motor Tax revenue paid into the Exchequer was £18,056,000, of which £600,956 5s. was paid over to the local taxation accounts and the balance issued to the Road Fund. These figures relate to Great Britain only; motor taxation in Northern Ireland is a matter for the Parliament of Northern Ireland.

Mr. TAYLOR

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many gallons of motor spirit were consumed in Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the year 1926; and what sum would have accrued to the revenue if a tax of 6d. per gallon had been in force?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The retained imports of motor spirit in 1926 were approximately 544 million gallons. Official statistics are not available either of the quantity produced in this country in 1926 from crude materials or of the variation in stocks as between the beginning and end of the year. I am, therefore, unable to give the particulars asked for by the hon. Member.
