HC Deb 17 February 1927 vol 202 cc1137-8W
Mr. CLARRY

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the steamships owned by Areas, and sailing under the British flag, are being actively utilised as a means of anti-British popaganda among British mercantile seamen, and whether he will consider the withdrawal in this case of privileges appertaining to the use of the British flag?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The first part of the question is covered by the reply given by the Home Secretary to Question No. 10. The conditions entitling a ship to be placed on the British register are laid down in Section 1 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894. There is no power to remove a ship from the British register so long as the statutory qualifications are complied with.
