HC Deb 11 March 1926 vol 192 c2631W
Mr. SHORT

asked the President of the Board of Education the standard of superficial floor space, cubic air space, and area of playing fields required in the erection of elementary and secondary schools, respectively?

Lord E. PERCY

The Board consider the plans of local authorities on their merits, but, as regard floor space and cubic air space, the standards normally adopted in such plans for new schools and enlargements are as follow:

Floor Cubic
area. space.
sq. ft. cub. ft.
Elementary schools:
Children up to 11 10 110–120
Children over 11 12 132–144
Secondary schools 16 170–190
No particular area can be specified for playing fields, as the area depends upon the number of children likely to make use of the ground, which, in the case of elementary schools, may serve more than one school.
