HC Deb 10 February 1926 vol 191 c1053W
Sir W. DAVISON

asked the Minister of Labour what are the present numbers of persons unemployed in hotel, boardinghouse, and club services; how many permits have been granted to employers in the catering trades to enable them to obtain the services of aliens in their business during the past year; and in what circumstances were such permits granted?

Sir A. STEEL - MAITLAND

The number of insured persons in hotel, boarding-house, restaurant and club services who were recorded as unemployed in Great Britain on 25th January, was 31,992. 187 permits were issued during 1925 to enable employers in the hotel and restaurant industry to obtain the services of aliens from abroad. Of that number, 90 were in respect of aliens the subject of an approved exchange—approximately the same number of British persons going abroad for employment; 60 were in respect of cooks and waiters for work at the Empire Exhibition, all of whom have now returned home, and the remaining 37 were mainly in respect of persons with special qualifications.
