HC Deb 09 December 1926 vol 200 cc2306-7W
Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of acres which have been given for use to the smallholders either in enlargements of holdings, new holdings, and grazings since the Kilgow Estate was purchased by the Congested Districts Board?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The total area which has been subdivided for new holdings and enlargement of existing holdings and grazings on Kilmuir Estate amounts to approximately 20,700 acres, being about 12,700 acres for new holdings and 8,000 for enlargements.

Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many applicants for new holdings and enlargements of existing holdings have not yet obtained land through the Board of Agriculture; and how many men, apart from those who took forcible possession of land, has the present Government placed on new holdings in Skye?

Sir J. GILMOUR

Assuming that the question refers wholly to Skye the Board of Agriculture for Scotland have on their lists 218 outstanding applications from ex-service men for new holdings and three outstanding applications from ex-service men for enlargements. The corresponding numbers for other applicants are 244 and 322 respectively. The reply to the last part of the question, taking the period from 1st November, 1924, is 67. None of the 67 men settled is in occupation of land forcibly taken by him.
